Overview
This archive records published nationwide first-preference party intention for Dáil elections. It is useful for tracking broad movement, but the underlying contest is candidate-centred and constituency-based, so the national series is evidence rather than a direct model of the result.
Electoral system context
Ireland uses proportional representation by the single transferable vote in multi-seat constituencies. Voters rank individual candidates, transfers occur through several counts and parties may nominate more than one candidate, making seats dependent on local candidacies and transfer patterns as well as first preferences.
Party and bloc rationale
The local balance groups Sinn Féin, Social Democrats, Labour, Greens and People Before Profit–Solidarity against Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Aontú. Independents remain outside because assigning them collectively would be misleading. The result is a navigation aid, not an official coalition or ideology measure.
Polling limitations
National polls cannot represent candidate competition, constituency magnitude or transfer behaviour, and independent support is usually aggregated despite substantial local variation. Question wording, undecided allocation and changing party labels also limit comparisons, particularly across separated election-cycle source tables.
